Man in Critical Condition After Being Assaulted With Hammer in Providence

Providence Police responded to reports of an assault on Putnam Street off of Atwells Avenue shortly after 6:30 PM on New Year’s Eve.

When police arrived, officers said the victim - a male in his 40s - collapsed to the ground with a wound to the head.

The victim told police he managed to take the weapon, a hammer, from the suspsect, who he said was inside the residence.

Police said they searched the house and found the suspect, later identified as Darwin Arroyo, 29, in the second-floor apartment.

 

Suspect Arrested

According to police, Arroyo appeared to be passed out in a bathtub; he was arrested and taken to the Providence Public Safety facility for processing.

The victim was taken to Rhode Island Hospital and is reported to be in critical condition.
