RI 2014 -- who's in, and who's hot?

With the announcement this week by former State Rep and Democratic Party Chair Ed Pacheco that he's running for Secretary of State in 2014, followed by Ernie Almonte's assertion that he's gunning for the General Treasurer seat, not Govenor as previously indicated, the developments added another angle to the 2014 RI state offfice candidate field -- and GoLocal took a closer look at who the contenders could be.

GoLocal talked with local political science professors to get their insights into the motivations, expectations -- and possibilities of winning -- for the current candidates who are seeking the state's top elected spots.

Almonte, the former state Auditor General, spoke with GoLocal on Thursday and said, "Look, there will be a clear distinction between someone who's been in office for twenty years -- and our state still ranks in the bottom five in economic and business polls -- and someone who's got a fresh voice, and a strong background who wants to bring this state to the top five."

In addition, Rhode Island Public Radio's Ian Donnis reported that Brown graduate Seth Magaziner, son of political operative Ira Magaziner, is considering a run at General Treasurer.
