A GoLocal story on campaign finance reports regarding donations by Speaker Gordon Fox unveils a significant flaw in the State's Campaign Finance reporting system. According to data provided on the system Speaker Fox made a series of donation to a range of candidates above the $1,000 limit. GoLocal correctly reported the data, but the State's reporting system is in error.

“This is clearly a computer error on the part of the Board of Elections. My only payment was $9,000 to the Hamilton Group for assistance it provided to me on my campaign, which I fully disclosed in my campaign finance reports. The other four references to the Hamilton Group are for services it provided to other candidates who are totally unrelated to me. I have notified the Board of Elections and I understand that they will be immediately addressing this error, " said Speaker Fox in a statement to GoLocal.

According to data reported in the state system a number of payments were made above the $1,000 limit.

In a story filed by GoLocal, the contributions in excess of the limit were as follows:

The payments totaling $3876.46 made during the time period July 6, 2012 through November 1, 2012 to the Hamilton Group for consulting and professional services on behalf of individual candidates are considered in-kind contributions that must be reported to the state board of elections by both the donor and recipient.
Sen. Hanna Gallo; $1,024.60; 11/01/12; Consultant and Professional Services
Rep. Scott Slater; $1,651.86; 07/06/12; Consultant and Professional Services
Mark Schwager; $1,200.00; 10/30/12; Consultant and Professional Services

Robert Kando, Executive Driector of the State Board of Elections told GoLocal, "It looks like there is an error in the computer that has caused that page to incorrectly report that Fox has made those payments on behalf of the other candidates. Again, there’s nothing indicating on any Fox report or any other report that we have found that Fox has made those expenditures reported on that page. So the page is incorrect. We are trying to find out why that page is incorrect."
