Ghiorse: Monday Morning Storm Update
Monday, February 02, 2015
The groundhog isn't telling us anything we don't already know. This winter still has a long way to go! Today's "Son of Juno" storm promises to bring to bear just about all of winter's nasty side... heavy snow, sleet, freezing rain and rain. The big problem is trying to figure out just how much of each falls when and where.
The storm center will take shape off the New Jersey coast and skirt just offshore south of Long Island and our south coast. Heavy snow will continue to mix and change to sleet, freezing rain and rain near and along coastal areas and penetrate inland. That's the tricky part ... how far inland will the changeover take place. Right now it looks like from Providence, south and east but that is not etched in stone. It's something I'll just have to watch. Where it stays all snow we can expect upward of a foot accumulation when it all ends later tonight. The accumulation elsewhere should dwindle, depending on the changeover, perhaps 6" or less along the coast. I may have to adjust all of this as the storm progresses, but that's my best estimate this morning.
One caution, once the storm winds down late today and tonight, the frigid Arctic air will rush back in causing a hard, flash freeze of any slush and puddles.
