Former Rhode Island Attorney General Dennis J. Roberts II has died, GoLocal has learned.

Roberts served three terms as Attorney General from 1979 to 1985. He was defeated by former nun Arlene Violet in 1984. Violet, a Republican, was America’s first female Attorney General.

His late father was former State Supreme Chief Justice and Federal District Court Judge Thomas Roberts, and his late uncle Dennis Roberts, was former Mayor of Providence and former Governor of Rhode Island. Both were political powerhouses.

After serving as Attorney General, Roberts had practiced in government relations and general civil litigation, labor, and employment law for fifty years. Prior to his own firm, he worked as a civil trial attorney, helped form the Rhode Island Group Health Association, and as the Vice-Chairman of the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority.

He received his J.D. from Boston College Law School.
