Exclusive Bailey’s Beach Club Calls Police on 3 High School Students’ Hot Dog Stand
Monday, July 22, 2019
One of the most exclusive beach clubs in America — Spouting Rock Beach Association (SRBA) or better known as Bailey’s Beach Club — called the Newport Police on Friday to try and force the removal of a hot dog stand which was started by three Newport high schools students. The students' stand was located more than 1,200 feet from the entrance of Bailey's and not visible from the club.
The not-for-profit beach club demanded the for-profit high school vendors be barred from selling on the sidewalk. The hot dog stand had set up outside the entrance to "Rejects Beach" -- the beach used primarily by Newport locals. It has no parking or concessions.
Viking Hot Dog cart was started by Will Farley, Kayleigh Mosher and Peyton Gardner. The three are all juniors at Rogers High School.

The club's membership is comprised of millionaires and billionaires. In contrast, the three high school students have summer jobs and operate the hot dog stand around their summer jobs.
The summer beach club, complete with grass tennis courts, is run by general John “Jack” Nolan the general manager — he earned more than $260,000 in compensation in 2016, according to the club's tax documents filed in 2017.
Turf Battle
“On Friday, it was Bailey's Beach who was calling and complaining. A gentleman came out and identified himself as Chris Gleason -- I believe that was his name -- and I could not believe the things he was saying. He said people at Rejects are ruining Bailey's for the members -- he says Bailey's owns all of this land,” said Farley’s father Michael.
“He [the man who identified himself as Gleason] said he was calling the cops. So I called the non-emergency line and dispatch and said we sent you the permits. Again, the kids were on the left side. The police came and took a picture which side they were on -- because there seems to be a lack of clarity as to whether the GIS map is correct. The city is saying we don't know [who owns that side],” said Farley, of where the youth were located -- and what Bailey's owns, and the stretch of land he believes they don't.
Gleason identifies himself on social media as superintendent for Spouting Rock Beach Association.
According to Viking Hot Dog’s social media Mosher wrote the business plan, Gardner handles the menu and prices, and Farley handled the permitting, logo design and social media marketing. The three have obtained all state-required permits including from the DOH, the DBR, the State Fire Marshal, the DOT and the IRS, according to Farley.
“They first starting selling hot dogs there two and a half weeks ago. They all have other jobs -- they do this on the weekends mostly, Saturdays and Sundays. They might have sold 42 hot dogs at lunch the other day, I know today they said it was 58,” added Farley.
Farley said the matter of the food cart -- and its location -- will be taken up shortly by the Newport City Council. "The council has the opportunity to do the right thing," said Farley.
White Only
In 2017, a GoLocal expose unveiled that Bailey's Beach Club includes no racial minority members.
Despite having promised to disassociate from all-white clubs, United State’s Senator Sheldon Whitehouse shifted his ownership to his wife - Sandra Thorton Whitehouse.
Combined, the Whitehouses own 25 shares in Bailey’s — making the couple one of the largest shareholders in a club.
For the Whitehouses, the membership in the club goes back generations on both sides of the marriage. Their parents, both of them, and their children summered at the ultra-exclusive club and had access to socializing and building contacts with the some of the wealthiest families whose ranks include multiple billionaires.
