EDITORIAL: No One is Safe Downtown, Elorza’s Press Secretary Robbed at City Hall
Sunday, August 21, 2016
Can we admit we have a problem now? Today, Jorge Elorza’s Press Secretary Emily Crowell was robbed outside of Providence City Hall during working hours.
The ongoing and disturbing trend in Providence of increasingf violence, panhandling, drug trade, and robberies in the Downtown has gone from bad to absurd.
The downtown experience was once just the nuisances of being panhandled and now it has elevated daytime City Hall robberies. Simply put the Downtown is not safe - not for anyone - even the Mayor's staff.

The story of the robbery, first reported by Dan McGowan at WPRI and confirmed by both the Police Department and the Mayor’s office, demonstrates how completely decayed the core of the City’s downtown is and how dysfunctional the Mayor is in managing the Police Department and public safety. We don’t need to get into the management of the Fire Department in this piece.
This week saw former Mayor Joe Paolino bring social service agencies and business leaders together to begin to find a strategy to help those battling drug additions and homelessness. Mayor Elorza attended the meeting, but left early.
So much for leadership coming from City Hall.
This is a sad day in Providence. Be safe.
