Cranston Man Killed in I-95 Accident, Man with Multiple Felony Warrants Charged

A Cranston resident died after being ejected from a motor vehicle that crashed on Interstate 95 in Providence at approximately 3:10 a.m. Saturday.

The victim was identified as Jason E. Irizarry, age 35, of 944 Cranston St., Cranston.

Irizarry was a passenger in a car that allegedly was traveling at a high rate of speed when it struck the median on Interstate 95 North, near Branch Avenue. He was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a seatbelt, according to the RI State Police.

Colonel Ann C. Assumpico, Superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police and Director of the Department of Public Safety made the announcement on Saturday.

The driver fled after the crash and was arrested shortly afterward by Providence police on nearby Abbott Street.

The driver has been identified as Anthony Correa, age 31, of 7 Linwood Ave., Providence. He was charged with:

·         Driving under the influence of intoxicating liquor and/or drugs, death resulting

·         Refusal to submit to a chemical test

·         Duty to stop – accident resulting in death

·         Obstructing a police officer in of execution of duty

·         Driving with a suspended/revoked/ canceled license – third offense

Correa also was wanted on three warrants for felony charges from the Warwick and North Providence Police Departments. He was processed at the Lincoln Woods Barracks and ordered held at the Adult Correctional Institutions, pending further court action.

The crash remains under investigation by Troopers from the Lincoln Woods Barracks, the Collision Reconstruction Unit and the Forensic Services Unit.
