City of Providence Christmas Tree Lighting Moved to December 5

Due to the inclement weather forecast for December 6, the City of Providence Mayor Angel Taveras, and the Department of Art, Culture + Tourism and the Department of Parks & Recreation have moved the Annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony to Friday December 5 at the Alex and Ani City Center.

The ceremony will begin at 6 p.m. with the Brown University Band playing selections from the ice.

At 6:15 p.m. Mayor Angel Taveras and Barbara Morse Silva from NBC 10 and WJAR TV will host the celebration.

The Wheeler School chorus (18 Wheeelers), and Sophia of Sophia’s Academy will also sing holiday favorites for the occasion along with Girls Rock RI.

Event members from Phi Sigma Kappa will be serving free hot chocolate and candy canes along with selling ornaments to decorate the City’s Christmas Trees - proceeds will benefit the Hasbro Children’s Hospital.

Other Attractions

Figure skating demonstrations will follow from local and national performers PPFSC Syncro Team (Pawtucket & Providence FSC), Isabella Cook (Smithfield FSC), Kayla Roach (Smithfield FSC), Phoebe Dodge (PPFSC), Megan Lunn (Warwick Figure Skaters), Sophie Louth (Warwick Figure Skaters), Natalie Sangkagalo (SC of Boston), Sonja Hilmer (Finer Edge FSC), Star Mates Synchronized Skating Team (2015 New England Regional Novice Ladies Pewter Medalist from Hayden Rec Center FSC in Lexington, MA) and more.

The Partnership for Providence Parks will also be in attendance with engaging activities for children. 

Tony “The Dancing Cop” LePore will be directing traffic outside the rink.
