New data from the U.S. Department of Education reveals that Brown University has the highest number of reported rapes of any school in the U.S. —  tying University of Connecticut with 43 rapes reported during 2014.

Brown, an Ivy League institution, has about 9,200 students, and UConn has about 26,500.

The data shows that Brown had more rapes than all of the other Rhode Island colleges and universities combined.

The next highest schools in Rhode Island were Roger Williams and Johnson and Wales' Providence Campus which were tied —  each had five rapes reported during 2014, the most recent data year available.

"We know for a fact that incidents of sexual and gender-based violence take place on campus – the results of the Association of American University campus climate survey show this and the work of our Sexual Assault Task Force and newly established Title IX office indicates the same," said Brian Clark, Director of News and Editorial Development at Brown University. "In addition to efforts to prevent incidents, Brown has taken significant action to improve our approach to the investigation and resolution of reports. The fact that 43 incidents were reported indicates that we are building trust among our campus community members in how the university responds to reported incidents of sexual and gender-based violence."

Some have raised questions if all sexual assaults are being reported at some schools. "The number of reports at Brown indicates that a culture in which students report incidents and seek support and assistance is beginning to emerge," said Clark.

"We are aggressively taking action at Brown to prevent and respond to incidents of sexual and gender-based violence, and we’re home to a community of dedicated students, faculty and staff who have galvanized around these issues. Together, we’re working to establish and maintain a safe learning and living environment in which healthy, respectful and consensual conduct represents the campus cultural norm."

Brown has been the center of a national debate

In the past few years, Brown University has had some of the most high profile rape cases in America.

In April of 2014, Brown student Lena Sclove levied a series of attacks against Brown University administrators for their handling of the discipline of her rape case.

A month later the accused rapist and Brown Student Daniel Koppin told his side of the story.  "What she was saying was not true," Koppin told the Daily Beast.

In 2012, GoLocal released the secret recordings tied to another high profile rape case at Brown University in 2006, which made national headlines and landed a feature story in The New York Times.

As GoLocal reported in January of 2012:

A former Brown University assistant wrestling coach secretly recorded a conversation with the lawyer representing the 24-year-old former student who was suing the school after being falsely accused of rape in 2006, revealing never before released details about settlement discussions that took place a month before an agreement was quietly reached.

In the more-than 20 minute recording obtained exclusively by GoLocalProv, Michael Burch, who coached William R. McCormick III at Brown, and J. Scott Kilpatrick, who was representing McCormick, discuss the settlement amount recommended by a mediator as Kilpatrick attempts to gauge Burch’s willingness to sign a confidentially release that would have left him unable to disparage the school, McCormick’s accuser or her father.

On the tape, Kilpatrick says Rhode Island mediator William Poore recommended $850,000 be paid to McCormick by the accuser’s father, an amount McCormick’s family believed to be too low and the accuser’s family said was too high. Poore later came back to Kilpatrick and raised the recommendation to $1,050,000, but also inquired about getting Burch to sign a release that would stop him from discussing the case any further.
