BREAKING NEWS: Chafee Appoints Fogarty as Head of Labor & Training
Friday, December 10, 2010
Governor-elect Lincoln Chafee announced early this morning that he had named former Lt. Governor Charlie Fogarty to be the Director of the Department of Labor and Training.
The announcement comes nearly a month after GoLocalProv was the first to report that Fogarty was being considered for a high-level position in Chafee’s administration. Fogarty is the second Democratic lieutenant governor Chafee has tapped for his administration. The first was Richard Licht, who will run the Department of Administration.
“As a former lieutenant governor, state senator, and gubernatorial candidate, Charlie has the broad-based experience necessary to sustain and expand the mission of the Department of Labor and Training, one of our most important state agencies,” Chafee said.

He will also work to strengthen and streamline DLT’s relationship with the Department of Education and the Board of Governors for Higher Education to ensure that Rhode Island’s workforce is prepared to meet the challenges of the new economy. Charlie has won the respect of people throughout the state – members of the business community, political leaders, and everyday Rhode Islanders – regardless of political affiliation.”
Fogarty is currently the Director of Policy for the Mayforth Group, a government relations firm. He served as lieutenant governor from 1999 to 2007. In 2006, he ran unsuccessfully against Gov. Don Carcieri.
