Council President Sabina Matos

Minutes after Lodge 3 of the Providence Fraternal Order of Police announced they voted 380-11 to condemn public statements made by City Council President Sabina Matos they said were "unjustifiable and falsely accused two of our Police Officers of misconduct in the incident with a Providence Firefighter," Matos fired back and said she is donating their campaign donation to youth organizations that are calling for police reforms.

“Today, I am proud to announce that I will be donating $1,300 that I have received in campaign contributions from the Providence Police Union to the following local youth empowerment organizations: Providence Student Union, Young Voices and Youth in Action," said Matos.

"The dialog happening in the city and across the country is critical. We are indebted to the youth for this time reflection," said Matos. "Today, I am converting that reflection into action. I will continue to work in partnership with public safety leaders, both our Police Department and in our community to develop policies that put the interests of the community first.”

The Police union, in addition to voting “no confidence” in Matos’ statement made against two police officers, also criticized a number of policy decisions including cutting the budget for the police department’s training budget.

The FOP also voted overwhelmingly "no confidence" in Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza and Public Safety Commissioner Steven Pare.
