Tuesday night’s Justice for Jhamal protest started at the Knight Library on Elmwood Avenue and ended 6 plus hours later and included 19 arrested by Providence Police.

The protest was sparked by the Sunday crash involving moped rider Jhamal Gonsalves and a Providence police vehicle.

Tuesday night’s event started peacefully with the initial gathering at the library and march to the Providence Public Safety Complex, which included a nearly 1 hour standoff.

It then decayed into a cat and mouse game with projectiles and fireworks being thrown at the police.

James Monteiro, a Providence community leader, took to social media and said, “As far as the community is concerned...its not about u proving that he hit Jhamal. That is clearly obvious! Right now the investigation is an attempt to find a way to prove he didn't."

"We're watching closely and this will go national and gain national support," he added.

Providence Public Safety Commissioner Steven Paré who was joined at a press conference on Monday by Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza, Chief of Police Hugh Clements -- and Attorney General Peter Neronha -- announced it will likely take at least two weeks for an investigation to conclude what led up to the crash.

"This is going to take some time," said Paré, who noted that the officer driving the police SUV at the scene of the crash is currently on administrative duty.
