90 Degree Heat Predicted in RI This Weekend -- Could It Break Record?

Very hot weather is predicted for Rhode Island this weekend -- and it isn't even Memorial Day.

The National Weather Service (NWS) is forecasting temps of higher than 90 degrees on Saturday and Sunday.

Rain on Sunday night is expected to break the mini-heatwave, with temps in the high 70s expected for Monday.

According to the National Weather Service, the highest historical temperature reached in the Providence area on May 21 was in 1996, at 93 degrees. 

The lowest temperature on that date?

36 degrees, in 2002.

Tonight: Areas of fog after 9pm. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a low around 51. South wind around 5 mph becoming light and variable in the evening.

Friday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 76. Light and variable wind becoming south 8 to 13 mph in the morning.

Friday Night: A chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly between 10pm and 4am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 60. South wind 7 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Saturday: Patchy fog before 7am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming sunny, with a high near 91. Southwest wind 7 to 10 mph.

Saturday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 65. Southwest wind 5 to 7 mph.

Sunday: Sunny, with a high near 91. Southwest wind 6 to 15 mph.
