2019 Rhody Award Winners for Historic Preservation Announced

Preserve Rhode Island and the RI Historical Preservation and Heritage Commission announced the 2019 Rhody Award winners.
The awards honor individuals, organizations, and projects for their contributions to the preservation of Rhode Island’s historic places.
The recipients will receive the awards at a ceremony the Aldrich Mansion in Warwick on Sunday, October 6 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The 2019 awardees are:
- Antoinette F. Downing Volunteer Service Award to Betty and Carlo Mencucci, longtime Burrillville preservationists who have found their niche conserving historic gravestones.
- Frederick C. Williamson Professional Leadership Award to Paul F. Miller, for decades of service to Newport as a curator and public scholar of decorative arts, historic architecture, and social history.
- Education Award for the Historic Wickford Markers Project, which highlights the village’s multi-layered, sometimes surprising history through a series of nine interpretive signs.
- Education Award to the Pawtuxet Rangers, community leaders in Pawtuxet Village who interpret Rhode Island’s military and community history and steward the company’s 1843 armory.
- Stewardship Award to the International Tennis Hall of Fame for championing historic preservation at the Newport Casino (1880).
- Historic Homeowner Award to Martha Werenfels and Frank Satterthwaite for the restoration of the Queen Anne-style Eudora Beynon and Ada Puffer House & Carriage House (ca. 1887) in Cranston.
- Historic Homeowner Award to Cheryl Hackett and John Grosvenor for the restoration of Restmere in Middletown, an 1857 villa designed by architect Richard Upjohn as a summer retreat for Alexander Van Rensselaer.
- Historic Preservation Project Award to The Coletta Group for the thoughtful restoration of commercial and residential spaces in the landmark Avis Block (1851) in Wickford Village.
- Historic Preservation Project Award to Sussy DeLeon and Stephen Biernacki for restoring the elegant Ballou House (1875-77) on Providence’s West Side for a mix of uses including Sussy’s real estate firm, commercial offices, and apartments.
- Historic Preservation Project Award to Robert Terino, Anthony Santoro, and John Santoro for converting the historic Lymansville Company Mill (1884-1956) in North Providence into Lofts at Lyman Mill, with 109 market-rate apartments and creative amenities.
