Rhode Island KIDS COUNT Senior Policy Analyst Paige Clausius-Parks joined GoLocal News Editor Kate Nagle on GoLocal LIVE, to talk about “Education Funding 101” — a workshop for parents being held Thursday evening in conjunction with PLEE — Parents Leading for Educational Equity —  at the United Way in Providence.

According to Clausius-Parks, the workshop will provide parents the information they need to understand how education is funded in Rhode Island, the Rhode Island state budget, the process for how the budget is created and approved, and the ways parents can influence the budget and legislative processes.

The workshop will include an overview of a few specific budget items, including funding for special education, English Language Learners and college and career readiness programs, that will help ensure that all students and particularly students of color and students from low-income families have access to the resources and supports they need to succeed.

The event will be held from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. ad the United Way of Rhode Island located at 50 Valley Street in Providence.

Clausius-Parks also spoke to being on the review team for the Johns Hopkins report released last spring — and how she sees the state takeover addressing the needs of Providences students.
