Moses Brown Faculty Discuss Transformation, Quaker Roots and Joyousness

Moses Brown science teacher Elizabeth Grumbach and head of the Lower School O.J. Marti join GoLocal LIVE
Moses Brown School is more than 200 years old, its campus is that of a small college, and yet, its most important vein is its Quaker legacy and sense of community, according to two top members of the school’s staff.

Moses Brown’s Head of the Lower School, O.J. Marti, said on GoLocal LIVE, “It’s a really joyous place and I think that is something that really makes us unique as a Quaker school. Also, we think about every single child and what makes them unique and with that, we try to kind of cultivate that in the classroom through all our hands-on experiences our lessons, and everything that we do on an everyday basis with our students.”

For long-time faculty member Elizabeth Grumbach, she said it is all tied to the school’s Quaker legacy.

“We see every individual as being deserving of an equal respect and having something to offer and, so it's about the human experience," said Grumbach. "So that's something I think we've learned to articulate better as a community and to use as a guiding light as we're navigating [the pandemic].”

Integrated Curriculum in Lower School

Both Marti and Grumbach staff the lower school. That facility has been in a dramatic physical rehabilitation to make it best in class.

But, Grumbach said it is the programs that differentiate Moses Brown.

“The lower school, in terms of its program, has evolved in some really exciting ways I think," she said. "There's a lot of collaboration that goes on in our division. As a science teacher, I’m working with the art teacher. I’m working with the classroom teachers. We do a lot of work to think about ways that we are we can work together to make the experience better.”

Marti adds that Moses Brown is about developing academic skills, but also much more.

“I think one of the things that's fundamental for me and I think as a school is that we're going to do a great job of educating our students with reading and writing and math, but it's also the people that they are and are becoming so we focus a lot on that,” said Marti.
