University of Virginia Professor of Politics Jennifer Lawless appeared on GoLocal LIVE, following the announcement that the House Judiciary Committee invited President Donald Trump to participate in a hearing next week on the constitutional justification for impeachment.

On Tuesday, Chairman Jerrold Nadler announced that his panel will hold its first impeachment hearing at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, December 4.

“What’s really important to keep in mind here is that what comes out of [Judiciary] is what the Senate will ultimately have to have a jury trial regarding," said Lawless.

"These charges are very important — it’s not going to be a fishing expedition, it’s going to be actually identifying what Donald Trump will be charged with," she added.

Lawless also spoke to the entrance of former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg and former Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick in the Democratic presidential primary race.

“Mike Bloomberg is doing something that nobody has been able to do before — which is put forward a strategy whereby he skipped the initial four states — which is his only option, because he hasn’t been campaigning in them,” said Lawless. “He’s going to pursue a Super Tuesday strategy instead. He’s just going to sort of go up on the airwaves and hope that this broad national campaign will net him the number of delegates that he needs to move forward."

“Now the reason this hasn’t worked in the past is because nobody has had the amount of money required to simultaneously be up in so many states — but with half the delegates at play he thinks it’s worth the risk,” said Lawless.

“The person who has the most to lose is Joe Biden,” she said.
