Colonial Mills — "Made in RI" Textile Company is Flourishing

Colonial Mills is an unlikely story — a textile company in Rhode Island that is not only surviving but flourishing.

Colonial Mills designs and manufactures high-quality textiles — specifically braided home fashion rugs. As an example, Colonial manufactures every Sundrella rug.

The CEO of the company, Don Scarlata, joined GoLocal CEO Josh Fenton to discuss the company’s continued success, its pivot to digital sales, and their upcoming move to a new facility in East Providence.

Today, the company employs 90 and has a number of openings.

For Scarlata, one of the keys to the company surviving the impacts of the “great recession” and more recent expansion and purchasing a new building has been the ability to tap Commerce RI’s revolving loan fund.

The company has over the years received two loans via the program.
