Top Political Scientist Lawless Discusses Raimondo's Confirmation Delay on GoLocal LIVE

UVA's Professor Jennifer Lawless
University of Virginia Political Science Chair Jennifer Lawless said that Senator Ted Cruz' hold this week on Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo's nomination for Commerce Secretary is "not a good thing" -- but it also could just be Cruz posturing for another presidential run.

"A hold means that until there’s additional information provided by the nominee that the committee can vet and discuss the nominee, the nomination’s basically frozen and it’s not going to move forward even though it passed through committee," said Lawless.

"So a couple of different things happen — the first is if he wants, the committee has no choice given he’s on the committee to move forward with this sort of more transparency and answers to questions about telecommunications and issues that Raimondo has been involved in," said Lawless. "The committee vote was 21-3, so there is bipartisan support for her and should this get to the floor there’s no question that she should overwhelmingly make it through."

Politics in Play

"The issue is whether additional questions come up and as you noted I think an unraveling is a good analogy here because it’s just going to be that -- you start picking away at one piece after the other then all the thread comes undone, so this is not a good thing," said Lawless.

"It could also be Ted Cruz posturing and saying he’s not going to let these nominations though, he wants more scrutiny, he wants the Senate to take all these nominees seriously and address some very real concerns — which is you know, sort of the respectful way of posturing for a future presidential candidacy," she added.
