Where the Smart Kids Are Going to College 2012
Monday, June 04, 2012
As Rhode Island's senior class graduates this month in ceremonies from Woonsocket to Westerly, from public, parochial, charter, technical and independent schools, here is a look at where the top 3 students at RI's high schools are going to college in the fall of 2012.
2012 trend: Financial pragmatism.
According to Christina Spaight O'Reilly, Director of Communications for the Providence Public School District, numerous high-achieving seniors got into "brand name" colleges and universities but are choosing to attend less glamorous institutions because of more attractive financial aid. “When looking at the college choices of Providence’s top grads, as with many urban communities and increasingly with others," she says, "it is worth noting that top students have been accepted to numerous prestigious and sought-after colleges and universities. Their final plans, though, are often driven by the offer of a financial package that makes college affordable and realistic in these difficult financial times."
