The art of Taiwan comes to Cranston this month as Mayor Allan Fung and the Cranston Public Library present Taiwan Sublime, Four Photography Masters’ Visions of the Treasure Island. This unique cultural event is being offered in conjunction with the Taipei Economic and Culture office in Boston. “Taiwan Sublime” comprises four series of photographs taken by Taiwanese photographers who for many years have crisscrossed Taiwan and its smaller sister islands with the aim of creating a record of its natural and human wonders.

"The City of Cranston is excited to be hosting such a unique cultural event at one of our libraries. We are proud to be exhibiting the work of these Taiwanese artists. This is an excellent example how Cranston continues to showcase diversity and open up our doors to the world.  I would like to thank both the library staff and the officials from Taiwan for working together in order to make this event possible” said Fung.

Four masters, four styles

Each series in the exhibition focuses on a particular theme and style. Chi Po- Lin’s work gives the viewer an eagle’s eye view of the breathtaking Taiwanese landscape, with pictures taken from high altitude—some from up to 14,000 feet. Chen Chi-hsiung, a self-taught master renowned for his use of contour and texture, photographs the ways in which people inhabit and transform the landscape.

In contrast, Lui Chen-hsiang has dedicated his work to capturing the magic of theatre, from traditional village entertainment to sophisticated, hi-tech performance art. Huang Ting-shen, meanwhile, has focused on the intense and often crowded world of Taiwan’s many religious rituals. His work gives the viewer a rare glimpse of sacred practices which are usually only accessible through written records.

The full “Taiwan Sublime” photo exhibit will be on display at the Central Library from June 2-June 30 in the Main Meeting Room Gallery. For more information please visit www.cranstonlibrary.org
