Roger Williams National Memorial To Hold ‘Throwback Thursday’ Event
Wednesday, February 04, 2015
In a local and historical twist on the popular “Throwback Thursday” craze, a handwritten letter written by Roger Williams will be on display at the memorial’s visitor center on Thursday, February 19, from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
This letter from Williams to Gregory Dexter, colonial Governor of the combined towns of Providence and Warwick in the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, discusses the debate that developed in England and the colonies about censorship of the press and the dissolution of Parliament. Williams also expresses his concern over his wife’s well-being in the letter.
“Thanks to the kind assistance from the Rhode Island Historical Society, the memorial will have a real bit of Roger on display,” said Ranger John McNiff, who will be on hand to talk about this letter and Williams.
