Apart from the iconic skyline of Providence, perhaps nothing creates a sense of place in our city more than our beautiful historic neighborhoods. The Providence Preservation Society Festival of Historic Houses, now in its 33rd year, celebrates these vibrant and varied enclaves, and the rich architecture and streetscapes that define them, opening doors and garden gates for a rare peek into these private worlds. And it's coming this week.

June 1: Providence Sunset Soiree

The weekend kicks off in earnest on Friday with an event that affords guests exclusive access and spectacular views of Providence from the private rooftop garden at the new Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, an award-winning example of adaptive re-use. Elegant hors d’oeuvres will be served followed by a private studio tour with internationally renowned glass artist Toots Zynsky and PPS Executive Director James Hall.

June 2: Elmgrove tour

College Hill was named one of the 10 Best Neighborhoods in America in 2011 by the prestigious American Planning Association. The Elmgrove section, meeting Blackstone Boulevard at its northern end, is a classic early 20th-century “city beautiful” residential streetscape, featuring winding tree-lined roads and gracious houses in a picturesque assemblage of architectural styles. The Saturday House and Garden Tour will be centered in this bucolic and nostalgic locale.guests will have the opportunity to visit some of the most extraordinary houses in the Elmgrove neighborhood.

June 3: Jewelry District tour

The Jewelry District, formerly a center of industry and manufacturing, has become a lively mixed-use residential area. 19th-century factories have been converted to luxury lofts, studios for artists, restaurants, and entrepreneurial businesses. With its adjacency to the Providence Riverwalk, and the recent arrival of the new Brown University School of Medicine, this district with its “downtown” feel offers tour-goers a glimpse into a historic part of the city which is very much again “on the move.”

The tours on June 2 and 3 are $35 in advance and $40 on the day of the event. The Providence Sunset Soiree tickets are $50 and $100 for all three days. For more information or to purchase tickets, call 401-831-7440 or visit www.ppsri.org.
