Olneyville NY System Wieners Named Top Fatty by Health.com

Saturday, July 17, 2010

Depending on where you live, it's a hot dog, frankfurter, red hot, gagger, frankfurter, wiener or just a "dog". However, in Rhode Island a hot dog by any name other than an Olneyville New York System wiener doesn't do the gagger justice.

However, if you're on a diet, that late night wiener served up on a steamed bun, topped with mustard, special meat sauce, onion and celery salt isn't exactly health food. Recently named by Health.com in their article The 50 Fattiest Foods in the States, New York System Wieners pack in a total of 28 grams of fat when the classic topping are loaded on.

It all comes down to choices. If you're out doing a pub crawl and have a late night craving, is it for a watercress sandwich or a NY System wiener loaded up with that so gross it's good meat sauce?

Olneyville New York System wieners may have been named one of the fattiest foods in the US, but it gets plenty of accolades that don't mention that fat content of this classic Ocean State food. Travel + Leisure Magazine recently released their "America's Best Hot Dogs" list and it was no surprise when Olneyville New York System was named. The folks at NY System have also had their wieners featured on Food Network's Best Thing I Ever Ate and on Guy's Big Bite. Most recently? Earlier this month, the best hot dog joint in Rhode Island was featured on ABC's "The View."

Olneyville New York System wieners might be high in fat, but when it comes to Rhode Island's favorite gagger, does it really matter?
