Pumpkin patch!

With autumn upon us, there is no better time to get out and make the most of the season. New England is blessed with plentiful farms and orchards to visit. A favorite among families is Frerichs Farm in Warren, RI. Head down to the farm for “Pumpkinpalooza” which runs through September and October to take a ride on the Pumpkin Coach; take a look at some giant pumpkins; or visit the “western town.” The fun of pumpkin patches is you can go multiple times up through Halloween... they're always fun.  43 Kinnicutt Ave., Warren, RI, 401-245-8245. www.frerichsfarm.com

Armor!

Before the museum shuts its doors in December, make your way to Higgins Armory in Worcester. It is a true gem in the city. Children will love exploring all of the exhibits and taking a peek into history. Higgins is dedicated to the middle ages, and is filled with an abundance of armor and shields to looks at. For younger kids, be sure to plan to visit on CastleKids Story Hour day. This program runs on the first Wednesday of every month, and includes a story, snack, and craft related to the story. 100 Barber Avenue, Worcester, MA, (508) 853-6015. www.higgins.org

Explore!

The EcoTarium, located on Harrington Way in Worcester, is the perfect place to bring any child interested in animals, the stars, and is curious about EVERYTHING (pretty much every kid out there!). For the entire month of September, admission is half-price, which means there is no excuse not to go! Kids will love the planetarium, which allows them to explore outer-space. They will also have a ball on the tree-canopy walkway and the Explorer Express Train, a miniature version of an 1860’s steam engine that loops through the grounds. The best part is that this is all available without even having to leave the city. 222 Harrington Way, Worcester, 508-929-2701. www.ecotarium.org

Music!

Music Together is a program designed for children from birth-age 7 and their caregivers that integrates music and movement. The program has been offered publicly since 1987 and operates on the concept that all children are musical. More important than anything, the program strongly encourages parent involvement, making for a very special time to be had. Music Together is offered in Rhode Island for children aged infancy-5 with Anne-Marie Foster, a story teller and children’s musician who also integrates story into her programs. For program enrollment details and class times and dates, visit Anne-Marie’s blog at http://amftnt.blogspot.com/ or call her at (401) 739-4171. www.musictogether.com

Butterflies!

When you are looking for something fun and educational to do with the little ones, look no farther than Magic Wings Butterfly Conservatory & Gardens in South Deerfield, Ma. It may be a little out of the way, but it is well worth the trip. Comprised of an 18,400 sq. feet facility and an 8,000 sq. foot glass conservatory, this place is an awe inspiring oasis for any age. The place is filled with butterflies, moths and tropical vegetation and stays at a balmy temperature of 80 degrees Fahrenheit year round. Peaceful music fills all buildings, making for an appreciated retreat from a hectic week.
