Fit for Life: It’s Over. Now What?

Thanksgiving - it’s over, but just the food part where we gorge ourselves into a food coma, then need a nap while watching football, then get up in time for dessert. (Sound familiar?)

The thanks and gratitude shouldn’t end though, as this is something we need to focus on all year long. We are all guilty of enhancing our thanks and gratitude around the holidays, but when they are over, we go back to our busy lives and put all the warm fuzzy feelings the holidays bring, on the back burner.

It doesn’t need to be that way, as long as we stay conscious of our thoughts and actions, and continue to make gratitude a priority and part of our daily routine. A daily habit as important as brushing our teeth!!

Sometimes we forget, so I am going to give you some ideas to remind you of the things we shouldn’t forget during the course of the year.

Some things we need to remain grateful for are:

People: There will always be people you can talk to that will elevate your mood and make you feel better after you spend time with them. Find more of these, and eliminate the toxic energy vampires from your life. We only have a limited capacity and amount of energy to expend, so chose to take in positive energy and limit your exposure to negative people.

Pick up the phone on a daily basis and reach out to someone that will brighten your day, or better yet do something that brings a positive spin to their day. Even if the person doesn’t answer, send a text that says “Hey friend, I am grateful for you, as people like you make the world a better place.” Hit send, and see how that brings light to you and the person you sent it too!!.

Opportunities: They are all around us. Be grateful for the opportunities that surround us. But don’t just be grateful and thankful, take advantage of the good ones presented to you. Personally, I am grateful for the opportunity to live my purpose and mission by helping people improve their lives through fitness.

I am grateful everyday that I get to make a living doing what I love. I am grateful to the people I serve and, thankful that they put their trust in myself and my team, and let us lead them on their fitness journey.

Our freedom: When you look at what’s currently happening in the world, I value our freedom even more today. We are extremely lucky that we can jump in our cars and get on a plane anytime, and be across the country in 6 hours or less. Not all countries are awarded that luxury.

I infrequently watch the news, but when I do, and see what is happening across the world, in this current day, and it shocks me that things like this can still be happening in what we call a “civilized” world. Don’t take anything for granted, and be thankful we live in the best country in the world, and possess the freedoms some don’t.

Lastly, we need to be grateful for our ability to make choices and control our circumstances.

This ties into opportunities and freedom, but to be more granular, we can control who we hang around and spend time with. We can control our health by choosing to eat the right things, stay hydrated, exercise and get to bed on time. We can control how much effort we put into our livelihood and the things that are important to us.

My suggestion is to exercise your right to control what you can control, and that’s your own health and well being. It is entirely up to you and the decisions you make. Even the people we coach won’t get results, unless they control the other 23- hours in a day they are not with us.

This is something you should be grateful for, because you have the ability and resources to become the best version of yourself, if you so choose to.

So as we approach the end of the year, and express thanks and gratitude, use this time to create habits that will carry out through the entire year.

The holidays will come and go, but don’t let the feelings we get from them fall by the wayside when they are over.

With thanks and gratitude,

Coach Matt
