Donna Costa of North Kingstown Honors Civil War Ancestor

Donna Costa of North Kingstown, Rhode Island honored her great-grandfather, Civil War veteran Pvt. John S. Babcock, on June 6.
Military style memorial service
Costa hosted a military style memorial service for Babcock. The service included a history of his military career and details of his life, readings of verse, the ceremonial folding of a flag by the Boy Scouts and the placement of a ceremonial wreath by Elisha Dyer Camp no. 7, Rhode Island Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War.
Civil War Veteran
A veteran of Battery G, 1st Rhode Island Light Artillery, Babcock was wounded at the Battle of Cedar Creek, 150 years ago this October 19.

He was buried in an unmarked grave in Elm Grove cemetery and has remained so until May, 2014, when his Costa, arranged to have a headstone placed at his gravesite.
A period firing offered a salute, and local Boy Scout, Ryan Costa, offered “Taps” on trombone.
The service took place graveside in Elm Grove Cemetery, 954 Tower Hill Rd., North Kingstown, RI.
