Public policy expert Darrell West will once again open the Newport Art Museum Winter Lecture Series on Saturday, January 8th, with an address entitled, “The New Political Landscape.” West currently serves as vice president and director of Governance Studies at the Brookings Institution in Washington, DC, where he was the founding director of the Center for Technology Innovation. A recurrent commentator on media-related topics and elections for major networks (CNN, MSNBC, NBC Nightly News, ABC World News, etc.), the acclaimed political scientist has ties to Providence as he previously served as John Hazen White Professor of Political Science and Public Policy and director of the Taubman Center for Public Policy at Brown University.

A Toast to the Humanities

In the lecture, West will assess the post-election political landscape. This will be the sixth consecutive year West has opened the series, which continues on Saturdays through February 26 (weather permitting), now in its 84th year. Richard Hunt, Chair of the Winter Lecture Series Committee, calls the line-up, "a wonderful mix of politics, art, humor, history, architecture and music. Our speakers will sort out the webs in Washington DC, make us laugh about Rhode Island, paint a portrait of the Wyeth family, treat our ears with symphonic notes, describe tomorrow's Newport built upon a historic past, feel the pride of early Irish business titans, and artistically amaze with sketches antics of the chimps at Africa's Gombe Institute."

Diverse Line-up

Other guest speakers this season include Michael Komanecky, Chief Curator of the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland, Maine; Francisco Noya, Resident Conductor of the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra; John K. Grosvenor, CEO and founder of Newport Collaborative Architects, Inc.; and Dr. Soheyl Amini, Assistant Professor of Sociology at Salve Regina University, among others.
