Better World by Design’s $1,000 Design Competition
Friday, March 09, 2012
A Better World by Design and Décor Craft Inc (DCI) have just announced that the annual DCI Product Design Challenge is now open for submissions... and the top prize is $1,000.
A Better World by Design is a three-day internationally acclaimed conference held annually at Brown & RISD campuses in Providence that connects students, professionals, and individuals from a variety of disciplines and countries, in order to build a global community of people working towards environmental sustainability.
The CDI Product Design Challenge
The DCI Product Design Challenge is a competition for design thinking, where individuals are encouraged to develop, submit, and produce ideas in order to create an atmosphere of global community, social awareness and passionate designers. A Better World by Design and DCI encourage participants from any field or background to submit their developed ideas for consideration.
The 2012 challenge asks participants to address this issue: “In today’s society, many people are spending more time indoors than ever before and missing the beauty outside. Submit an idea for a product that will encourage people to re-engage with the great outdoors.”
“I think it’s a very relevant problem and we’re trying to leave it open enough for people,” said Katharine Li RISD ‘14, the Competition Coordinator. “We want solutions and innovations that can be really implemented and by implementing them we can have social impact.”
Non-designers welcome
“This year we’re changing the format up a little bit,” Li said, adding that the committee is trying to branch out to people who are not designers or industrial designers in the hopes of finding new great ideas that would typically not be submitted. “You can even sketch an idea on a paper napkin,” she said.
“I’m excited to see all the different angles that designers bring to it," said Steering Committee Chair, Raaj Parekh Brown ‘13.
The prizes
The winners will be awarded $1,000 for 1st place, $500 for 2nd place, and $250 for 3rd place. Additionally, winners will be presented with the opportunity to have their winning design produced and distributed across the nation by DCI and showcased at the 2012 Better World by Design conference. Submissions are due by April 1st.
