The first polo match of the season takes place this weekend.

There is plenty going on around Newport to keep you busy this holiday weekend. From festivals to road races, there is something for everyone. 

This weekend’s events include the Point Association Annual Plant Sale, the first polo match of the season, and a celebration at the Top of Newport.

Spring Mushroom Hike at Ballard Park 

Join expert mushroom hunters, Ryan Bouchard and Emily Schmidt, for a guided hike through Ballard Park. Ryan and Emily will share foraging secrets, as well as information about the unique roles fungi, play in the ecosystem.

There are many mushrooms that favor maple trees which are the most popular tree in Ballard Park.

The hikes go from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. or 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Point Association Annual Plant Sale at St. John’s Church

The Point Association's Annual Plant Sale will take place on at St. John's Church on Saturday. 

They will be selling annuals, perennials, herbs and garden items at great prices. 

Handmade items from Point artists/craftspeople will also be available for purchase including hand-loomed shawls.

The event goes from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Rotary Charity Polo Match at Newport International Polo Grounds

The Newport Rotary Club's annual benefit match will get the ball rolling again this year at the polo grounds of Glen Farm on Saturday.

The match features the home team, Newport playing against a regional challenger in a classic six-chukker dual.

The match goes from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Newport Memorial Day Ceremony

The ceremony will be led by United Veterans Council of Newport County.

It will take place at noon on the lawn of Newport City Hall.

It will feature a keynote speech by Mayor Henry Winthrop and a rededication of the Miantonomi Memorial Tower and the unveiling of plaques honoring the 56 men from Newport who died in World War I at 1:30 p.m. at the park.

The tower will be open to the public following the ceremony.

Sakonnet Garden Open Days 

Dates of their Open Days varies yearly to showcase different sections of the garden in bloom. 

"The peak of bloom should just be starting in the Rhododendron Punchbowl and Azalea Hedge. Trilliums and tulips should still be going full blast (among hundreds/thousands of woodland wildflowers)," says Sakonnet Garden.

The event goes from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
