NY Times Best-Selling Author Powers to Speak at Mental Health Association of RI Event

The Mental Health Association of Rhode Island is set to feature New York Times best-selling author Ron Powers at its November event to be held at the Metacomet Country Club in Riverside.
"There is probably no better way to express the tragedy of serious mental illness than in the telling of one's personal story. We admire Mr. Powers for raising his voice to improve mental health care in our country, and are pleased to sponsor his appearance here in RI. How powerful a statement of Mr. Powers - 'in our era, in our country, mentally ill people suffer and die because of our fear,” said Ruth Feder, Executive Director of the Mental Health Association of RI.
The event will take place on November 2 at 6 p.m. with a reception, followed by a 6:30 to 8:30 speaking and workshop program.

About Powers
Powers is the author of "No One Cares About Crazy People: The Chaos and Heartbreak of Mental Health in America.”
Powers book is based on the true story of his two sons' struggles with mental illness, having both been diagnosed with schizophrenia. He says, "I was determined to give the mentally ill - invisible to much of society and often denied the very basic acknowledgment of their own humanity - a voice."
Powers breaks nearly a decade of silence about his sons' struggles and delivers a decisive history of mental illness. He is also the co-author of "Flags of our Fathers" and "True Compass", and is a Vermont resident.
The book will be available for purchase and Mr. Powers will be signing books.
