NEW: Dive Day Puts Families “Underwater” at Kent Hospital

That's the theme of Dive Day 2011, Kent Hospital’s Hyperbaric Medicine Center showcase taking place Saturday from 9am-2pm, where the public can learn first hand about the Center and the services offered to patients and the community.

"Dive Day is a great way to become part of the close knit dive community, and enjoy a fun and exciting day, while learning about Kent Hospital's Hyperbaric Medicine Center," said George Perdrizet, M.D., medical director. "We welcome the public to this event and hope to give them a glimpse of the diving world and also the state of the art medical services we provide at our hyperbaric facility."

Diving gear, special presentations, free lunch

Local EMS search and rescue teams will be in attendance and area dive shops will be present to showcase the latest diving gear. In addition, there will be four special presentations, tours of the facility and complimentary lunch.

At 10:00 a.m. Dr. George Perdrizet and Dr. Ricardo Duran, assistant director, will provide an overview of the services offered at the Hyperbaric Medicine Center.

At 11 a.m. Dr. Nicholas Bird will speak on behalf of the Divers Alert Network. Dr. Bird is the CEO and Chief Medical Officer at Divers Alert Network (DAN) based in Durham, North Carolina. Dr. Bird oversees the departments of medicine, research and education. Dr. Bird is an active diver and dive instructor who is trained in family medicine and has served as flight surgeon in the US Air Force in Iraq. He received his initial training in hyperbaric medicine while stationed at Travis Air Force Base and completed a fellowship in diving and hyperbaric medicine at the University of California San Diego. Bird then served as the medical director for hyperbaric medicine at Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George, UT prior to coming to DAN. 

Scientific explorations

At noon, there will be a special presentation by Michael Lombardi, Diving Safety Officer for the American Museum of Natural History and interim Diving Safety Officer at the University of Rhode Island.  Lombardi will speak about a reconnaissance scientific exploration of deep reefs in the Bahamas, to 136 meter depth, using mixed-gas circuit re-breathers. Lombardi is a contract scientific and commercial diver in Rhode Island.

At 1 p.m. Dr. Ricardo Duran will lead a presentation on dive fitness, providing an overview on important health related aspects of diving. All four speakers will be available to answer your questions following the presentations and throughout the day.

Kent Hospital is Rhode Island's largest hyperbaric medicine facility, the only hospital offering 24-hour emergency hyperbaric oxygen therapy in the region and a Divers Alert Network facility. The program brings the healing power of oxygen to selected, hard to heal wounds and other forms of tissue injury utilizing three monoplace chambers.

Dive Day will be held at the Wound Recovery and Hyperbaric Medicine Center at Kent Hospital located at 455 Toll Gate Road in Warwick. Please enter the Kent Hospital campus through the main entrance on Toll Gate Road. The Wound Recovery and Hyperbaric Medicine Center will be on your right across from the The Breast Health Center.
