Where to Go For Cheese When Farmstead Closes
With the news last week that one of Providence's best restaurants, Farmstead, would be closing its doors at the end of the month, the additional disappointment was realizing that it meant the cheese shop was closing as well. From the day it opened, Farmstead gave Providence instant foodie "cred" with its well-sourced artisan cheeses and accompaniments. The restaurant soon followed as did the loyal diners and the deserved accolades. When Al Forno restaurant arrived on the Providence scene in the 1980, there was a similar effect. Suddenly, someone saw Providence worthy of divine cuisine, and the restaurant drew the attention of the world to Providence. While Farmstead’s establishment didn’t cause quite the same intensity of ripples, it did help to put Providence on the map this century as one of the go-to cities that took its food seriously. While filling Farmstead’s shoes will be a colossal task, we still have a few shops that we love to turn to, in addition to Farmstead while it remains open, where you can find the good goods.
