Food is fun and delicious at XO Cafe, and mom is sure to love their sweet bread French toast.

Mother's Day usually marks the beginning of a very busy restaurant month. Graduations, Christenings and First Communions, Memorial Day and Mother's Day make May a kick-ass month for chefs. They really love cooking for Mother's Day though--all big parties of families enjoying the food and paying homage to Mom. This year Mother's Day arrives on May 12... so you've got time still to pick one of these great spots to take Mom whether she wants fancy or fun and casual.

Chow Fun Food Group, Providence

We love Chow Fun and their assortment of spots in Providence. Owning five restaurants in the capital city allows them unparalleled coverage of the Providence dining scene. It also means that no matter what your Mother's taste is, you can find a restaurant she will love. Start at XO Cafe with a fresh and seasonal brunch with sweet bread French toast, broiled local oysters, lobster omelette, housemade ham benedict. Another favorite is 10 Prime Steak and Sushi. Allow Executive Chef Ryan Escude to wow you with his take on surf and turf by starting with a spring asparaus soup, then try to choose between grilled halibut and roasted leg of lamb, finishing with lemon pound cake. If Mom is a country girl she may love the BBQ going on at Rick's Roadhouse. The whole menu sounds awesome but we keep going back to the dessert of strawberry shortcake on a house made biscuit. Chow Fun's two burger joints are also in on the action with cool sounding mac and cheese specials and of course their fresh burgers. The easiest way to get contact information for each restaurant is through the corporate website at www.chowfunfoodgroup.com.

Castle Hill Inn and Resort, Newport

There are many benefits to living so close to the water, but we always come back to the view at Castle Hill. Meals seem to benefit from the abundant beauty. For Mother's Day, the Inn is serving a local and seasonal brunch that highlights what they're all about. The meal begins with family style appetizers that include: shrimp cocktail, braised leg of lamb in phyllo, deviled eggs, petite crab cakes with avocado mousse, Salt Cod Brandade Croquettes, Maine Shrimp & Asparagus Strata. The buffet includes: Hereford rib eye with horseradish cream and an amazing sounding lobster hash with poached eggs and herbed creme fraiche. Desserts are all made in house and provide the perfect finish. 590 Ocean Dr. 849-3800, www.castlehillinn.com

Persimmon, Bristol

Everything is exquisite at Persimmon--Mom will certainly agree.

If Mom is looking to channel her inner chef, we suggest taking her to Persimmon, in Bristol. Chef Champe Speidel has been on the forefront of the local dining scene for many years now and we feel he is among a handful of chefs that we would trust our Mothers to. We have never had a bad meal at Persimmon so you can be comfortable that you will have a good experience also. On Mother's Day, Champe is offering his normal spring menu plus a few special treats depending on what's local and fresh. Spring menu highlights include a citrus-cured Point Judith fluke with smoked milk jam, navel orange and grapefruit, petite herbs, extra virgin olive oil and spiced bread crumbs, lamb three ways: slow roasted rack; braised lamb breast and shoulder rillette with spring parsnips, petite radishes and cauliflower; light lamb jus. And for early bird Moms, Persimmon is opening on May 12th at 4pm! 31 State St. 254-7474, www.persimmonbristol.com

Rasoi, Pawtucket

Feel like taking Mom on a walk on the wild side? If you are, one fun way to expose Mom to something new is to check out the buffet at Rasoi. Rasoi has become our favorite spot for Indian food in Providence. It's bright and fun and the food is always good. We're addicted to their naan bread! Don't ever say the Martini's weren't looking out for you. Several different Masalas, fresh naan and tandoori chicken will make Mom happy. 727 East Ave. 728-5500, www.rasoi-restaurant.com

Iron Works Tavern, Warwick

The creative team at I.W.T. have been serving delicious, affordable food for several years now and we find ourselves there often. For Mother's Day, you have a couple of options as the tavern is open from 10 am to 10 pm serving a buffet brunch from 10-3. The buffet features all things brunch with an omelet station, all your favorite breakfast items, delicious seafood and, of course, a carving station with several kinds of meat for carving. 697 Jefferson Blvd. 739-5111, www.theironworkstavern.com

Luigi's Gourmet Express, Johnston

So let’s say that you would love to host Mom at your house but you don’t have the cooking “chops” to pull it off. One of the best things you can make in your kitchen is humility. Know when you’re beat folks. If a huge dinner for family or in-laws or whatever scares the daylights out of you, let it go and call the folks at Luigi’s. You’ve all been there…guests have arrived…people are antsy…your Mom or Mom-In-Law, is staring and nothing is ready. Well, in the good words Robert Deniro, FUGEHTABOUTIT! Let Luigi’s customize a menu for you that will wow Mom and allow you to remain sane. All you’ll have to do is order, pick it up and heat it up. It’s really that easy. And heck, you can probably rope the kids into clean-up if you’re crafty and get the whole day off! 1357 Hartford Ave. 455-0045, www.luigisgourmet.com
