Great Restaurants for Vegetarians
Monday, August 23, 2010
We already know that RI is a friendly place to vegetarians and vegans alike (PETA recently honored Providence as one of America's most vegetarian-friendly cities), but where are the best restaurants for these diets? GoLocalProv did the research and consulted the experts to inform you on which restaurants serve up the best veg-friendly meals.
AS220 FOO(d): In the Heart of Providence
Located in the heart of downtown Providence, the recently relaunched in-house restaurant at AS220 has already won the hearts of vegetarians. They have a full-time vegan chef and almost every last item on the menu can be adjusted to fit each diet. With the full AS220 mission in mind, they look to local farmers and food artisans for their ingredients. And let's not forget there's a full bar right across the room. And bands playing in the next. Hot item: The Mac and Cheese with Broccoli (pictured below) is a sure-fire hit and easy on the wallet for only $6. 115 Empire St, Providence, 831-9327, www.as220.org
Garden Grille Cafe: There’s Only One
It's RI's only all-vegetarian restaurant, so let's begin with this Pawtucket institution tucked away just across the northern border of Providence's East Side. Not only are they
great for dinner, but the $6 daily lunch special with soup, salad, and bread is a budget-friendly major meal for the day. All of their food is fresh, healthy, and delicious. Hot item: the roasted butternut squash quesadilla is a huge crowd favorite, and comes with jack cheese, black beans, avocado, and a side of salsa. Bonus points: Organic beer and wine are now on the menu. 727 East Ave, Pawtucket, 726-2826, www.gardengrillecafe.comGET THE LATEST BREAKING NEWS HERE -- SIGN UP FOR GOLOCAL FREE DAILY EBLASTRasoi: The Restaurant Next Door
Located right next to the Garden Grille Cafe, and while it is not exclusively vegetarian, Rasoi certainly holds its own. Featuring diverse regional cuisine from India (Rasoi is Hindi for kitchen"), Rasoi offers incredible number of vegetarian and vegan options every day, and is among the best overall Indian cuisine in the state. Hot item: Tuesdays look for a special pre-set meal for vegetarians, and
Saturday, vegans can indulge in an all-vegan brunch from 11:30am-3pm. 727 East Ave, Pawtucket, 728-3463, www.rasoi-restaurant.comJulian's
A standout for vegetarian and vegan fare, this West End hotspot always has ample variety for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and was one of the Providence restaurants cited by PETA for its outstanding veggie culture. You've got to love a place that will subsitute seitan for any meat, right? Hot item: Vegan items for breakfast, like peach cobbler pancakes and cinnamon orange French toast. 318 Broadway, Providence, 861-1770, www.juliansprovidence.com
Crazy Burger Cafe and Juice Bar: Not Just for Summer
This is the place where vegetarians and meat-eaters can go to and eat together peacefully especially during a beach day, or any day, because this place is worth the drive. The toughest thing about Crazy Burger? Deciding what to order. With everything from vegetarian-and-vegan-friendly burgers to delicious mains like stir-fries and vegan lasagna, you're going to be puzzling. Hot item: The sweet potato fries are pure bliss, and you can usually see an order on every table. 144 Boon St, Narragansett, 783-1810, www.crazyburger.com
