RI FC, Minor League Soccer Club, Attendance Plummets After Opening Game

Rhode Island’s new minor league soccer team is struggling on the field and, maybe more importantly, in the stands.

Rhode Island FC opened on Saturday, March 16, to an opening crowd of more than 4,000 in attendance.

But since then, the crowds have greatly declined.

Their second home game was played in a cool light rain and drew a crowd of less than 2,000 fans on on April 6.

However, more concerning for the team, founded by serial investor and soccer team promoter Brett Johnson, may be the attendance at Saturday night’s match.

The game was played before a crowd counted to be less than 1,700 despite a warm spring night.

The home matches are played at Bryant University.

According to Bryant, “With a seating capacity of 4,400, Beirne Stadium utilizes a design that is usually reserved for larger stadiums, ensuring excellent sight lines and maximum comfort for spectators. A 3,200-seat permanent bleacher comprises the backdrop for the home side of the field, while 1,200 additional seats are available on the visitor's side. 300 seats in the stadium are equipped with backs and armrests.”

The attendance is going in the wrong direction.

Johnson is a minor owner in several teams, including the Phoenix Rising club that plays in the USL, like the RI FC team, and he owns less than 1% of the Ipswich Town club in England.

Rhode Island taxpayers are on the hook for nearly $140 million in bond payments over the next 30 years as a result of a financing structure by Governor Dan McKee for a stadium which will be privately owned.

The stadium, dubbed Tidewater Landing is now under construction in Pawtucket.

The stadium is expected to be completed in 2025.

On Field Product

Further, the team has struggled on the field. RI FC is winless through five matches, having tied four matches and lost one.

The club is now ranked 11th of the 12 teams in the Eastern Conference.
