New study says that Providence does not work hard.
The City of Providence does not work very hard.

“Many Americans view hard work as the path to achieving the American Dream. We work so hard, in fact, that we put in more hours at our jobs than several other industrialized countries. The average U.S. worker puts in 1,780 hours per year – 70 hours more than the average in Japan, 266 more than the U.K. and 424 more than Germany,” said WalletHub.

This study follows a 2017 study in which Providence was ranked third least hardest working city in the country.

It also follows a 2018 study by WalletHub that ranks Rhode Island as the 2nd least hardest working state in the U.S.

Providence’s Rankings

  • 110th Best - Direct Work Factors
  • 72nd Best - Indirect Work Factors

The Rankings

Providence ranks behind Fresno, California and Bridgeport, Connecticut, who rank 108th and 109th respectively.

Providence ranks ahead of Columbia, South Carolina and Newark, New Jersey, who rank 111th and 112th respectively.

Anchorage, Alaska is ranked as the hardest working city in the U.S., while Detroit Michigan is ranked as the least hardest working city.

The Method

In order to determine where the hardest-working Americans live, WalletHub compared 116 of the most populated cities across two key dimensions, “Direct Work Factors” and “Indirect Work Factors.”

They evaluated those dimensions using ten key metrics, which are listed below with their corresponding weights.

WalletHub then determined each city’s weighted average across all metrics to calculate its overall score and used the resulting scores to complete the rankings.

WalletHub ensured that at least one city from each of the 50 states was represented.

  • Average Workweek Hours: Triple Weight (~36.92 Points)
