Despite claims about economic growth, Rhode Island got some sobering news in the recent jobs numbers announced on Thursday. The number of employed Rhode Island residents in December 2016 was 525,500, down 800 from the November number of 526,300, according to the RI Department of Labor and Training. 

Over the year, the number of employed RI residents was up 3,300 from December of 2015. 

The labor force totaled 553,300 in December 2016, down 2,300 from November 2016, but up 1,100 from December 2015.

Seasonally Adjusted Unemployment Rate 

Rhode Island’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for December 2016 was 5.0 percent, down thee-tenths of a percentage point from the November rate. Over the year, the unemployment rate is down four-tenths of a percentage point from the December 2015 rate of 5.4 percent. 

The number of unemployed RI residents was 27,800, down 1.500 from the November figure of 29,300. Over the year, the number of unemployed dropped by 2,200. 

Overall, the U.S. unemployment rate was 4.9 percent in July 2016 unchanged from the previous month and down four-tenths of a percentage point over the year.
