ForbesWoman Names RI City as Tops for Working Moms

It really does pay to live and work in Rhode Island, and one city in particular has come out again in a national ranking as a Top City for Working Mothers.
Providence has once again placed in the top 25 cities in America in the 3rd annual ranking just released by ForbesWoman, although this is a drop from its showing at #22 last year.
The 2011 Best Cities for Working Mothers crunched numbers on women's earnings, safety, school districts, as well as new assessments including commuting times and the annual cost of childcare, to rank the largest 50 metropolitan areas.
Surprise winner in 2011
The addition of commuting times and the cost of childcare shook up the rankings and created a startling new winner. Surging from the middle of the pack in 2010, Buffalo-Niagara Falls, NY snagged the top honor from ForbesWoman this year, followed by Columbus, OH, Hartford, CT, Pittsburgh, PA, and Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News, VA. Boston ranked at #8.
Why Providence works for moms
What put Providence in the Top 25? For one, the city got high marks for education investment from ForbesWoman, ranking #7 in the country of per pupil expenditure. Providence also placed at #13 for commuting times, and its violent crime rate was among the better nationwide, at #16. Women's earnings in Providence were strong as well, ranking #18 in the US.

But for moms who work, budgeting remains a challenge. Providence's cost of living ranking was #42 overall, and its cost of childcare equally rough at #40 nationally.
