StyleWeek Providence coverage would not be complete without a roundup of the phenomenal hair and makeup trends we saw on the runways. From braided updos and soft curls to mermaid green eye shadows and rosy lips, Artistic Director Jessica Berndt and Lead Stylist Bethany Wood and their talented teams created an assortment of looks you can do at home.

Colorful Eyes

Color is always a good thing on the runway and the shows did not disappoint. We saw gorgeous, seagreen eyes at Daniela Corte and super bright eyes at Joseph Aaron Segal.

Trend to Truth: Color is wearable anytime whether swiping a quick wash of color over the lid or going for gusto with a high pigment. The key is to blend and get color palettes that are right for your skin tone and eye color. Do not fear color, it can pull your whole look together.

Smoky Eyes

The smoky eye will never go out of style. We saw many a heavily lined eye at the shows including Andrea Valentini, Samuel Vartan, Avni and Sarah Prost. “We used a lot of Laura Mercier Caviar Eyeliner and black eyeshadow to create the looks; if you want to look like you just got off stage, this is the look”, Jessica shares with us.

Trend to Truth: A smoky eye is sexy, sultry and doable for all. If black scares you, try browns, grays or plums. Brush on a light color over the entire eyelid, from lash line to brow bone as a base, then draw a V with one branch along your lash line and one in the crease and blend. It takes practice but you can see our tutorial here.

Rosy Lips

Lips were adorned with rosy reds and classic crimsons in shows such as Kara Wickman, Maria Del Carmen Mercado and Samuel Vartan. A strong lip makes a bold statement and completed the looks perfectly.

Trend to Truth: From gloss to lipstick and everything in between, red lips are always en vogue. Head to your closest makeup mecca to try shades and see what works for your skin type. Click here for a red lip rundown.

Loose Curls

Hair was bouncing and bodacious on models at Kelly Eident and Kara Wickman. Soft, loose, tousled curls, either worn down or half-up created a fun and fancy free look that works for all hair types.

Trend to Truth: Curls are easy enough to get, whether you use a curling iron, old school rollers or head to the salon. If you curl yourself, make tight curls then run your fingers through to make them fall loose and lovely.

Side Braid Updos

A bun or chignon with a braid is a chic and tailored look but also gives an air of chic. We saw side braids in full updos and partials at Sarah Prost and Maria Del Carmen Mercado, adding a bit of sultry to the looks.

Trend to Truth: A side braid can be tough to do on your own so enlist a friend who knows how to French braid. Once the braid is in place, wrap remaining hair and braid into a chignon and pin. Instant glam!

Big, Bold Hair

Gone are the days when one size fits all. We saw large-and-in-charge big, bold hair at Sam Mendoza, Karen Beebe and Joseph Aaron Segal. The hair itself is like its own accessory and definitely has its own voice.

Trend to Truth: Instead of trying to make your hair something it’s not, embrace your hair’s potential and go with it. Got curls? Go crazy curly! On the frizzy side? Tease it up! Nothing says confidence like rocking what you’ve got.

Contrast

Two designers really stood out with high voltage makeup: Joseph Aaron Segal and Jonathan Joseph Peters. Segal’s show featured models with bright, pale eyes and deep, peachy cheeks. Peters’s models were strikingly gorgeous, with their eyes covered with transparent film with their eyes (altered with the power of technology) printed and super dark cheeks and lips.

Trend to Truth: While both of these looks are for dramatic effect, we can learn from them when it comes to contrast. The message is to be daring in your makeup and try something you’ve never tried before. See what works for you and step outside your beauty comfort zone.
