Painting By Heade

No gallery in Rhode Island offers more premium art in Rhode Island than William Vareika Fine Arts on Bellevue Avenue in Newport. 

The block that Vareika's gallery is on exudes history -- and expense.

The most expensive painting now available for sale at the gallery is Martin Johnson Heade 1875 painting “Pink Orchids and Hummingbird on a Twig.”

The $575,000 price may seem a bargain.

"Heade is a very important 19th century American artist who had many connections to Rhode Island. Early in his career he painted portraits, including one of Moses Brown," Bill Varieka tells GoLocal.

Heade’s 1868 “Thunderstorm over Narragansett Bay” is in the collection of the Amon Carter Museum, Fort Worth, Texas.

"Our painting is a masterpiece. Heade’s hummingbird and orchid paintings are among his most rare and sought after images," he adds.

"His painting style and subject matter, while derived from the romanticism of the time, is regarded by art historians as a significant departure from that of his peers. He was first taught by his father, Paul Joosten Wouwerman, a historical painter of moderate ability," writes the museum named after Heade/

One of the top men's clothing store in Rhode Island is Marc Allen Fine Clothiers and its founder Marc Streisand tells GoLcoal, "I just made a suit for a guy that’s made out of Record Bale wool, which is the finest in the world. Suit sold for $45,000."
