Bring the beauty of spring into your life starting today with these 6 simple touches.

The Rhode Island Spring Flower and Garden Show this weekend is a sure sign that spring is around the corner even if there is snow and ice in the forecast again. The infusion of floral warmth inside the Convention Center may find you dreaming of tee shirts and sandals just when you’re starting to hate that winter coat. Let’s feed your need by adding a dash of spring to your sad winter weary style.

Splashes of sunny color

By now your harvest reds and moss greens are packed away but start slowly ousting those blacks and browns too. Nothing says warmer days ahead like a pop of clear saturated color and we hear that pistachio is the new black. Get colorized with a sweater in a hot new color and pair them with your gray wool pants for warmth. Even staid tweedy pants will look gorgeous with a beautiful hot pink cardi over a crisp white shirt. You'll still be toasty but you'll feel on trend for the inevitable warmer days ahead. Promise.

Tie one on

A scarf that is. Don't be shy about color here either. The gorgeous summery scarf that you wear when he puts the top down, will look light and garden-fresh tied around your neck with that warm cashmere turtleneck you still need. Look for scarves in bright color blocks, graphics, or prints with lilac, turquoise, or orange.

Lighten up

Your complex winter scent is great for inviting hours before the fire but try one of the new lighter wispier fragrances that show up this time of year. Opt for a small bottle so you're not married to it - just enough jolt to jump start a new mindset. It might just be infectious enough to put a spring in someone else's step too. And right about now, who wouldn’t want to be told that they smell like fresh cut flowers?

Kick 'em off

Those boots that looked so chic last fall are now as dusty as Wyatt Earp’s. Go ahead and polish them but on days without ice and snow, step into some fresh neutral pumps. Try shiny faux alligator in taupe or black patent leather platforms. Pair with patterned trouser socks and even your workhorse pants and sweaters will look sunnier. Later, when spring is officially underway, your shoes will look great with a pastel pencil or flippy floral skirt.

Paint an optimistic smile

It may be too soon for that lively coral lippie, but what's wrong with a warm rose or clear red? Tuck away your mulberries and fuchsias and opt for something just a hair brighter than your usual dark lips. Your optimistic smile will be cheery peeking out above your wrapped wooly scarf.

Handbag heaven

Ditch the somber black leather bag for a brighter tote. Don't go crazy with too light cream, but choose a teal or navy – it says you are still dressing for the season but gives a bow to spring and will lift your mood every time you open it for yes, those sunglasses.

Soon full-on spring dressing will be as natural as sunshine but until then, adding warm weather touches will make putting your arms in the winter coat yet AGAIN, a whole lot easier.
