If you've given up the fight to look gorgeous in 90 degree heat, don't lose hope! Beat the heat with these tips for your summer look.

It's see-your-breath arctic inside and torridly humid outside. It must be summer in New England and so far, we’re having the high-noon variety. Frigid summertime offices, shops, and movie theaters that make you feel like you are in a meat locker, are chief complaints among women. The question is how to have a pulled-together look that works indoors as well as out in the sultry air. Fortunately, this year's styles offer some solutions.

Start with a base

Choose a slim sleeveless dress or blouse. Or consider a jersey fabric in a cami that lies close to the body for a chic edge. But avoid anything that feels even a little constricting or tight. Ditto anything with a synthetic or silk lining; make sure there's room for air to flow. You'll peel down to these basics when you leave the office for lunch in that outdoor cafe.

Add lightness

Cardigans are featherweight this summer. Light weaves are available in so many colors and it won't be hard to find one to coordinate with your base (see above). Many have pretty stitching or cool crystal embellishments. No one will mistake it for a winterized look if you choose the right fabric in a summery sherbet or tropical bright.

An airy touch

Finding a diaphanous scarf is essential to wrap around your shoulders on movie date night. A soft, light one, perhaps with a bit of bohemian fringe is a chic way to cover up. Look for pastel pink or turquoise and when you step outside into the steamy night air, tie it low on your hip for a sexy accessory.

Cropped jacket

The ease of wearing shorts and t-shirts is what makes summer living so great. But keep a cute cropped jacket on hand for marathon grocery shopping or browsing the corner bookstore for your new summer read. A jacket polishes your casual look and keeps bare arms from uncomfortable goose-bump territory. Choose modern shapes or try a feminine cotton jean jacket in a berry color.

Tote it

A very important essential is an office-worthy bag - slim but large enough to hold your summer layering. Fold your cardigan neatly to prevent wrinkles, lay the jacket on top, and tie the scarf around the handle. Remember schlepping is hot. Preparation is chic.

Don'ts

Don't choose dresses with voluminous sleeves. For your base, we're talking simple cooling sheaths.

Don't keep an old pilled cardigan on the back of your office chair to go over everything. The last thing you want is for co-workers to start checking your sleeves for balled up tissues.

With forethought and creative planning, you can manage your own personal climate control and look terrific this summer!
