Mike Araujo

Welcome to the arena.

Rhode Island Jobs with Justice Executive Director Mike Araujo appeared on GoLocal LIVE ahead of his official announcement to run for Providence City Council in Ward 13.

“I want to be a voice for working people -- my family has a history of public service,” said Araujo of his decision to run for office.

Araujo spoke to outgoing Ward 13 Councilman Bryan Principe, who had announced earlier this year he is not seeking re-election.

“Principe had a great last year, between the [Community Safety Acty] and building bridges,” said Araujo.

From expressing his support for the proposal currently pending by Jason Fane to build a 46 story tower on the former I-195 land, as well as rent control measures, Araujo spoke to a wide range of issues he envisions running for office.

PVDFest

We may not be good on potholes, traffic camera, budgets or schools, but we are pretty good at rolling out a good art and music festival.

PVDFest is a great party. Now, if we could just get the Elorza administration to be as excited about education, city services, and overall quality of life.

Town of Coventry

Top officials have resigned. Critical town records are missing. Top official fails to file ethics forms. And, now the worst.

On Wednesday three State legislators called for the immediate resignation of Frank Palin, chairman of the Coventry Fire District. He was arrested last week in Massachusetts and charged with indecent assault and battery on an elderly and disabled patient.

Rep. Jared R. Nunes (D-Dist. 25, Coventry, West Warwick), Rep. Robert A. Nardolillo III (R-Dist. 28, Coventry) and Sen. Leonidas P. Raptakis (D-Dist. 33, Coventry, West Greenwich, East Greenwich) sent a letter to Palin urging him to step down.

“Due to the recent allegations filed against you, we the members of the Rhode Island General Assembly, are requesting the immediate resignation of your position as Chairman of the Coventry Fire District and will request the Board of Directors to do so by forwarding them a copy of this letter,” the legislators wrote.

The Speaker of the House's new PawSox deal is a head-scratcher. It raises the price of the financing by an estimated $20 to $25 million.

The claim is that is the bonds fail, the state won't have to intervene...hmm...we have never heard that before.

Dunkin' Donuts Center

One of only three summer events scheduled for the Dunkin’ Donuts Center has been canceled —  “A Conversation with President Clinton.”

The event was scheduled for June 15th. The building claims, “Due to unforeseen scheduling circumstances this event is being removed from our calendar of current programming. Your tickets will be fully refunded, we apologize for any inconvenience.”

Larry Lepore, General Manager of Dunkin’ Donuts Center refused to respond to a request for comments.

As GoLocal reported earlier in May, after the college graduations, Providence’s premier event venue was slated to host only a food event, a “Conversation with Bill Clinton," and an August appearance by Banda Ms de Sergio Lizarraga. The rest of the summer the building is closed.

RI GOP

Does the Republican Party have any candidates?

The GOP has three for Governor and two for the United States, but after that, there is hardly a murmur.

Congress in the 1st District?

General Treasurer?

Attorney General?

Editor's note: Paul Pence is running for Lt. Governor and Pat Cortellessa for Secretary of State.
