URI Student Dies - 2nd Student Death In 8 Days

The University of Rhode Island confirmed that international grad student Suhail Habeeb died over the weekend following an incident at the campus pool.

"The University extends its deepest condolences to Habeeb’s family, friends and colleagues," said URI in a statement.

This is the second URI student death in a little over a week, after nursing student Dominque Franco passed away following a medical emergency on February 16.

The Incident

According to URI, emergency crews were called to the school’s Tootell Aquatic Center at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Sunday where lifeguards were performing CPR on Habeeb.

According to the School, Habeeb was taken to South County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Habeeb was a graduate student in physics from India.

He has been attending URI since the fall of 2016.
