Taveras Victorious in Democratic Primary for Providence Mayor

Wednesday, September 15, 2010

“The people of Providence have spoken and tonight, we have made history,” said attorney Angel Taveras as he addressed family, friends and supporters who gathered by the hundreds for his victory speech delivered in a tent at the corner of Westminster and Union Streets Tuesday night. Taveras defeated City Councilman John Lombardi, state Representative Steven Costantino and Chris Young to secure the democratic ticket for the November 2 general election. Then he face independent candidate Jonathan Scott, who was the Republican nominee for U.S. Congress in Rhode Island’s First District in 2006 and 2008.

Taveras ultimately claimed 48.8% of the vote (10,951) with Lombardi trailing far behind with 29.4% (6601). As revelers cheered, danced and cried tears of joy, Taveras, looking ahead to November, declared, “With your help and continued support, I will be the next mayor of all of Providence.”
