What's that, bro? Providence is a great summer city?

Providence has been named to another summer tops list, but this may not come as quite the good news as recent namings to Travel + Leisure's top ice cream cities. The good book of maleness, otherwise known as BroBible, has named Providence one of the country's top cities in its 25 Best College Towns to Live This Summer ranking. Providence managed to snag the #6 spot, behind New York City but ahead of a slew of big contenders such as Boston, New Orleans, Austin, Seattle, and Los Angeles.

Providence Convention & Visitors Bureau: It's all good

Come mid-May, many college towns empty as burnt-out students rush home for some R&R. However, many students opt to stay in Providence once the books close. And why wouldn't they? "We have great local music, lots of talented artists, a critically acclaimed dining scene that includes fantastic food trucks, and are a city that celebrates diversity and individuality," said Kristen Adamo, Vice President of Marketing at the Providence Convention & Visitors Bureau, who took the BroBible laurels in stride.

Adamo compares Providence to #10 city Austin, Texas, in that it has many similar qualities that make Providence a great college town. However, we do Austin one better, she says. "Several of our colleges are in or near our compact, walkable downtown.

The bro factor

For their ranking, BroBible "looked for location (proximity to beaches or other notable geographic points were a must), nightlife NOT reliant on college being in session, and a city's general reputation for fun."

So what makes Providence the place to be? Big things come in small packages, according to BroBible. "Providence is a relatively small city with only 178,000 Rhode Islanders calling it home, but it kills in two of the most important categories on this list: Its party scene, and its near-perfect location. Travel + Leisure just named Providence the country's ninth best city for nightlife, with special emphasis placed on its killer beer…and its relative affordability."

The BroBible ranking may contrast with Providence's brand-new advertising campaign, in which Providence Mayor Angel Taveras, the City of Providence, the Providence Tourism Council and the Providence Warwick Convention & Visitors Bureau (PWCVB) have collaborated on three television commercials and a radio spot touting the city’s charms.

A spot touting the city’s vibrant downtown features Frank LaTorre, director of public space at the Downtown Improvement District; Lisa Newman Paratore, owner of Homestyle boutique; and Len Cabral, founder of the Roots Café. Another focuses on family fun and includes Renee Gamba, director of the Museum of Natural History; the puppets of Big Nazo; and Megan Fischer, director of communications at the Providence Children’s Museum. The final spot, still in production, will cover the city’s renowned culinary scene and will include Matt Gennuso, executive chef/owner of Chez Pascal and Hewtin’s Mobile Dogs; Lois Ellis, co-owner of Scialo Brothers Bakery; and Omar Curi, owner of Los Andes. Mayor Taveras is also featured in each of the spots.

Tanya Haapanen, marketing manager of the Whiskey Republic, a true destination for bro's seeking sustenance, had Providence pegged.

"It's a unique city with a lot of cool spots and great things that no other city really has," she said. "There's Thayer Street, Federal Hill, South Water where you can enjoy the waterfront with a beer. Even when college sessions are out, the students can still sit out on Wickendon Street and choose from some 25 kinds of craft beers. Providence is a place that's smaller than Boston and definitely New York, but it's a nice in between of a small town and city life."

Like she said, it's all good.
