The City of Providence is on the hunt for a new school board member, Mayor Angel Taveras announced yesterday.

The new member will fill an open position left when Philip Gould, an English professor at Brown University, resigned, saying Taveras had overstepped the bounds of his authority as mayor.

Applications for the position are due 4 p.m. Friday June 24. The application can be downloaded from www.providenceri.com. Applications can also be picked up and returned to the Office of Neighborhood Services, on the second floor of City Hall, or the school department office, at 797 Westminster Street.

The applications will be reviewed by the Providence School Board Nominating Commission, which will recommend a nominee to Taveras. Nominees need to be confirmed by the City Council.

“The School Board plays an enormously important role in shaping the future of public education in Providence by providing leadership and decision-making that broadly impacts the everyday experience of our students,” Taveras said.

“In times of fiscal emergency like we face now, the School Board is a lead partner in our efforts to accelerate student achievement and give all students the education they need and deserve. Becoming a member of the School Board is one of the most direct ways that a Providence resident can get involved and join the fight to transform our schools.”
