NEW: Local Leaders React to Death of State Senator June Gibbs

Local officials were saddened to learn of the passing of former longtime State Senator June Gibbs, who died Sunday at her home after a battle with cancer.
A liberal Republican from Middletown, Gibbs served 24 years in the legislature representing before leaving office in 2008.
"I am deeply saddened by the passing of June Gibbs, revered Senator and public servant, mentor and cherished friend,” Lt. Governor Elizabeth Roberts said. “June was well-loved and embraced by her constituents in District 12 for each of the 24 years she served in the Rhode Island Senate. June was a dedicated champion of improving long-term care for seniors and child care for working families, and I was fortunate to work with her on many occasions. She was greatly admired for her ability to reach across party lines to get the work done. I offer my most sincere condolences to her family and friends, as she will be sorely missed."
Senate President M. Teresa Paiva Weed called Gibbs an “energetic and principled public servant.”
“June Gibbs was a genuine and caring person who conducted herself with the utmost class. From her service to the Navy during World War II through her tenure in elected office, she was an energetic and principled public servant who strongly represented her constituents while addressing the issues of the day with wisdom and compassion. She always lived life to its fullest. The thoughts and prayers of the Senate are with her daughter Elizabeth and their entire family during this difficult time.”
Funeral services are set for April 15, at 2 p.m. at the United Congregational Church.
